Today’s fashion graduates, across multiple disciplines from design to styling, PR, photography and journalism, are asked to undertake full time, unpaid internships for up to a year in order to earn their place in the industry.
Even for those with years of experience, offers of unpaid work are common, leaving talented people without the means to support themselves.
The Fashion Debates brings together another crucial discussion asking questions on this little-talked-about, but endemic, problem and the impact its impact on the industry as a whole: Is there really no money in fashion, or are people just used to free labour? What are your legal rights to getting paid as an intern? How can we bring more people from less privileged backgrounds into the industry if they can’t earn a living wage?
